For many years, Nel has been preparing herself for a disaster. In her cellar she has enough food and survival equipment to last her for many human generations. When her daughter and son-in-law want to send her to a Nursing Home, Nel locks the door and swallows the key. Lost under the ground with neither day nor night, they try to understand one another.

In these times when doom and gloom are ever-accelerating, LYNX examines the ridiculous aspects of fear, paranoia and the fight for survival.

Apocalypse How had its premiere on 12 January 2019 in the Toneelschuur, and later went on tour in the Netherlands, in theatres such as Ins Blau in Leiden, De Lieve Vrouw in Amersfoort and Theater aan het Spui in The Hague.

Are we prepared for the end of the world?

The makers of Apocalypse Howare fascinated by ‘doomsday preppers’; these are the people who are arming themselves against doomsday and the end of the world. From a specific way of thinking that one can have total control over one’s fate, the doomsday prepper does everything possible to prepare for the doom of the Final Hour. Some people will have their boat ready for when the tsunami suddenly engulfs them. Others get quarantine areas ready in case of an outbreak of bird flu, or build radiation-proof nuclear bunkers and to the stocking-up of iodine tablets.

We can accuse the ‘prepper’ of suffering from delusions, but is it his behaviour which prompts our own doubts about the meaning of life and our fear of its finality? In a sharp-edged and amusing way, Theatre Group LYNX attempts to show the underlying human desperation involved. The whys and the wherefores. You are given a glimpse into the existential ravine which gapes in us all.
